Successful use of the high-strength grade 40MnCrB5 in series production

A long-standing customer approached us with a special challenge for a tube section as a carrier tube that was used as part of a camshaft with cylinder deactivation: In addition to high demands on dimensional precision, the customer expected a tube with high strength and hardenability as well as high wall thickness including wall reduction on one side.

 

To meet the high strength and hardenability requirements, we were able to develop a high-strength grade 40MnCrB5 for this application in collaboration with our pre-material suppliers.

Thanks to the good cooperation, we were able to develop the mechanical properties required by the customer for a specific customer requirement and thus develop and implement geometric requirements for series production.

Process readiness

Our processes are based on four core competencies: welding, heat treatment, drawing and processing.

 

We shape steel strip into various tube dimensions with energy and precision. We use high frequency to weld strip edges into a perfect whole. 

 

Comprehensive process and material expertise is crucial, especially when processing high-strength materials. Annealing creates a homogeneous material structure and serves as an optimal prerequisite for subsequent processing steps. The required product properties are achieved in a protective gas atmosphere using five-zone annealing furnaces. Drawing is a controlled test of strength between tool and material. The tubes are formed into complex shapes using individual processes. 

 

Thanks to in-house tool development, the most precise dimensional accuracy and maximum variety of shapes are achieved. 

 

Modern tube processing centers with numerous measuring options enable high-quality processing that is adapted to individual customer requirements.

Lightweight construction, as a synonym for weight or mass reduction in vehicles, is one of the greatest challenges for automobile manufacturers and suppliers. Mubea Präzisionsstahlrohr AG offers new possibilities with high-strength materials. 

 

By using air hardeners or heat-treatable materials, parts and components can be made lighter while retaining their physical properties. 

 

Optimized engineering of the tubes increases production efficiency and reduces overall production costs (total cost reduction).

Our tubes for the drive shaft Monobloc

Mubea Präzisionsstahlrohr AG manufactures welded-drawn tubes made of high-strength materials for one-piece drive shafts in automotive engineering. 

The tubes are usually cold-formed during production. For this reason, the manufacturers of Monobloc drive shafts place great importance on consistent forming properties and high dimensional accuracy of the processed tubes. Furthermore, high strength values with low surface decarburization are required after induction hardening. The trend towards lightweight construction is increasingly demanding higher-strength materials (> 34 MnB4), which enable weight savings to be achieved with comparable physical properties. 

The tubes for the one-piece drive shafts (monobloc) are cold-formed during production. For this reason, the manufacturers of monobloc drive shafts attach great importance to consistent forming properties and high dimensional accuracy when the tubes are delivered. Furthermore, high strength values with low surface decarburization are required after induction hardening. 

The trend towards lightweight construction is increasingly demanding higher-strength materials that can achieve weight savings with comparable physical properties.

Mubea Präzisionsstahlrohr AG manufactures welded-drawn tubes from high-strength materials for three-piece drive shafts in automotive engineering. 

The trend towards lightweight construction is increasingly demanding high-strength materials. The tubes for the 3-piece drive shafts are welded together with other components to form a single unit. This places high demands on dimensional accuracy, roundness, the quality of the end machining and the weldability of the tubes. Our tubes for the cardan shaft

During processing, some of the tubes for the cardan shafts are drawn in at the ends, which places high demands on the forming properties and the quality of the weld seam. 

Tight tolerances are required for roundness, straightness and wall thickness in order to avoid running noises and vibrations. This guarantees problem-free operation of the cardan shaft in the vehicle. The use of modern air hardening materials opens up new possibilities for saving weight.

The requirements for tubes for piston rods are diverse. The machining and finishing of the outer surface requires excellent tube surface quality. 

Very good, homogeneous forming properties are required for thread rolling. Tight tolerances ensure efficient production of the piston rods. High material purity ensures fatigue strength during operation. The requirement for lightweight construction can be met by using high-strength materials.
